one good way would be to put some product on it like mousse or gel and sleep with it in a braid

ONE can NEVER have to much moisturizer. I recommend that after washing your hair, use a leave in conditioner and then apply some extra virgin olive oil. Braid it tightly large to medium braids and leave it that way for about three days. Unravel it carefully and then you should have waves. Much like a crimp affect but that would be the natural way to go instead of applying heat; which is NOT good for African American hair.

DO NOT BRUSH OR COMB after you unravel it! You can use your fingers part it into a micro wave but whatever you don't brush or comb it.

Condition it with an ultra moisturizing deep conditioner, then white its still wet use a hair cream in it to soften it, braid it into one braid, let it dry, take it down, rub on an oil, use a wide toothed comb to only hold the ends, do not comb it at all, blow dry while the hair is stretched, until the hair starts to loosen wave a bit, let it cool while it is still stretched out. Shake it out rub on more oil to make it really shiny, and then put it into a ponytail.
